Setting out to “make money online” after being pitched by a slick marketer almost always results in failure. Why?

Perspective.

If you set out only to, “make money online,” you are falling into a trap from the start. The real way to make money online is by starting a website about something that interests you, and if you build it right (with good information and resources!), eventually you will find a way to generate income.  It’s a long term perspective.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a business model when you set out, what it means is that unless you build a site that visitors find value in, good luck in generating targeted traffic.

This is something that the huckster selling that latest get rich quick scheme doesn’t tell you. It is what so-called Internet Marketing expert that constantly harks on about “the importance of social networking,” or “personal branding,” just doesn’t get.

Regardless of your topic, if your site is going to grow with traffic and produce income, it has to be build and promoted with two broad objectives in mind.

First and foremost, it has to be built for traffic and search engines. Thinking about traffic starts with the design of your website, and it never ends.  It is a constant process of building, research, writing, posting, commenting, link building, emailing, & more that never really ends if you are doing it right.

Next, your site should be designed to convert. What are you trying to do? Sell things? Generate leads for an offline business?  Spread a free eBook download? Design your site specifically to achieve this task. Once you have your site in place and you are actively promoting it, you should track everything you do, so that you can do more of what works, and less of what doesn’t.

While those other idiots are spending their time blogging about the latest trending topic, you can be fine tuning your website into the money making weapon you know it can be.

    Have you ever thought about the words you use when you search the Internet to find information on a particular topic?  You almost always type certain words into the search engine to find what you are looking for, right?  Well, if you are starting an online business the words that people use to search for your product or service will play an important role in the amount of traffic you receive to your website as well as the quality of your traffic.  Finding the right keywords means finding your target audience which is the people that are definitely interested in your product or service.

     

    So you are probably thinking, “Okay. Well how do I find out what words people are using to find my product or service?  Sounds complicated.”  Well, the good news is that there are many resources and tools available online to help you discover what keywords people are using in their searches.  Take the time in the beginning to find the right keywords because they will bring in the profits for your online business for many years to come.

     

    Start with a Spreadsheet

    Sit down and start with a spreadsheet in a program such as Microsoft Excel and enter as many keywords as you can think of that people might use to search for your product or service.  Brainstorm single words, word combinations, misspellings, and phrases that people might use during their searches.  When you are finished you should have a list of several hundred if not a thousand different keywords and keyword combinations.  This will help you to find a highly targeted audience that will be interested in your product or service.

     

    Use a Keyword Tool

    There are many keyword tools available online that are both free and paid. If you would like to start getting an idea of how keyword tools work you can try Google Keyword Tool External.  You simply set up an account by going to the Google home page and clicking the “Sign In” icon on the upper right hand side of the screen and then click “Create an Account.”

     

    A keyword tool provides the data you need to choose the right keywords for your product or service.  When you enter the keywords from the spreadsheet in the keyword tool it will return information that indicates how many people are searching with each word or phrase and the number of competing websites for those words.  Most keyword tools will also make suggestions for keywords that perhaps you did not think of.  The data you view in the keyword tool is going to help you find your target audience.

     

    Choosing Keywords

    You may feel overwhelmed at first when you view the keyword results in the keyword tool.  Look for keywords and keyword phrases that have a high search volume and a lower number of competing websites.  When you discover these words enter them on a separate spreadsheet.

     

    As a rule of thumb avoid broad search terms because these are high competition keywords which will bring untargeted traffic to your website and will cost you a fortune in advertising.  Instead go for highly targeted keywords that address a specific audience.  For example, if your topic is iPods and you choose the keyword “iPod.”  This is a very broad search term and will return a zillion competing websites. What are people looking for when it comes to an iPod? What about iPods?  Are they looking for instructions on how to use an iPod?  Are they looking to buy an iPod?  You just don’t know.

     

    So if you choose “iPod” as one of your keywords you will get a lot of website visitors but they will not necessarily be interested in what you have to offer and they will quickly leave your site.  Also, if you are paying for advertising you will be leaving a lot of money on the table with nothing to show for it.

     

    On the other hand, if you choose high targeted keywords such as “iPod troubleshooting for downloading music” you know exactly what your audience is looking for when they arrive at your site and it makes it easier to deliver the solution.

     

    Keyword research involves a time investment if you are going to choose the right keywords.  Believe me the time investment is worth it at the beginning and it will be the main force behind driving highly targeted visitors to your website.
